Selecao seek a style change
The most successful side in World Cup history, Brazil are revered around the world for their free-flowing, attacking style of football that has allowed them to give the world the gift of players like Pele and Garrincha. But a new breed of Brazilian finds itself at this year’s World Cup, under the tutelage of their defensive midfield general turned coach, Dunga.
Fitting, perhaps, that Brazil will find themselves up against North Korea in the first game, as the defensive mindset that that has taken over the Samba stars is employed to full effect in Asia as well. Of course, the gap between the two sides is huge. Conventional wisdom dictates that Brazil should walk away with a comfortable win, but they will have to break down some stubborn defending if they are to do so.
In Kaka, Robinho and Luis Fabiano, Brazil don’t quite have the same attacking platform as the three Rs of Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho from the last time they lifted the trophy in 2002 – but they do possess a very similar midfield with Kleberson and Gilberto Silva employed in the holding roles. For Cafu and Roberto Carlos, read Maicon and Michel Bastos – full backs so impressive that Barcelona star Daniel Alves is left on the bench – but the criticism of their style under Dunga has not lifted despite the players on show. Make no mistake: they may have topped their qualifying group but, to the Brazilian public, they have a lot to prove.
Their opposition, North Korea, have already won the favour of their fans simply by qualifying for the tournament. With a pedigree that includes a shock run to the quarter-finals in 1966, beating Italy 1-0 in the process, the Koreans head into South Africa knowing that just a draw in the ‘Group of Death’ will make them global celebrities. The secret nature of the country, and indeed the team, have many guessing how they will set up, but a 5-4-1 formation looks likely with every man behind the ball.
Brazil player in focus: Kaka. After months on the sidelines troubled by injury for his club Real Madrid, Kaka holds the key for the creativity of this Brazil side. This squad is not overly blessed with the usual array of attacking talents, but Kaka stands alone as one of the best in the world on his day. He will be well rested after the season and should be raring to go.
North Korea player in focus: Jong Tae-Se. The only North Korean to make himself readily available to the media before the tournament, Jong, who was born in Japan, has talked of his ambition to score a goal a game at the tournament. ‘The Asian Wayne Rooney’, as he has been dubbed, is basically the only attacking outlet for his side and has proved himself a dangerous finisher in some of the pre-tournament friendlies.
Key battle: Robinho v Nam Song-Chul. Robinho has a lot to prove at this World Cup after being shipped off to Santos on loan. His pace and trickery will certainly provide a tough test for the Korean defence, especially with Nam Song-Chul filling in on the left-hand side of defence and attempting to get forward as much as he can. Most likely, Nam will avoid any attacking urges but Robinho’s talent as he drifts around the final third could embarrass his opponent.
Trivia: Korea means ‘Land of the Morning Calm’ in Korean and the North Korean football team’s nickname is Chollima, a mythical winged-horse popular in central Asian folklore. It is said to be “too swift to be mounted”.
Stats: North Korea’s biggest win came in 2005 when it stomped Guam 21-0. Don’t expect the same attacking prowess against Brazil.
Odds: Brazil (1.10), the draw (9.00), North Korea (29.00) with Bet365. Jong Tae-Se to score anytime is 7.00
Prediction: No shock here, although the Koreans may win over a few doubters if they can avoiding haemorrhaging goals early. Brazil should put at least three past them.

Dunga hits out at media
Brazil coach Dunga urged journalists to stop “hitting and attacking” him as he prepares for his first World Cup finals match in the dugout against North Korea at Ellis Park tomorrow night.
Dunga, who captained his country to the world crown in 1994, has come under fire from the Brazilian press and public for adopting a pragmatic approach which puts winning above the ‘futebol bonito’ – beautiful football – which the country is famed for.
The game against the Koreans could be a great example of the demands on Dunga – a win alone will not be considered good enough, the team will be expected to win with style.
Dunga said: “I support the team from the morning to the evening and if I respond and say something a bit out of turn they are going to say I am bitter. You guys (the media) hit me, you attack me from morning to the evening and if I just answer, you tell me I am out of line.”
Asked if he drew any strength from the friction with the media, he added: “I don’t think there is anything positive you can draw from it. You may not like my answer, but you can criticise me for 24 hours, I can only criticise you for one second, and that is the crux of the matter.”
Dunga, a holding midfielder himself in his playing days, is most widely criticised for his use of two anchor men with little or no flair – usually Gilberto Silva and Felipe Melo.
He does have star man Kaka fit, however, after an injury-disrupted season with Real Madrid, while Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar has overcome a back problem.
Brazil are in a difficult group, with Portugal and the Ivory Coast vying with the five-time champions for a place in the last 16 and Dunga admitted there has never been a time in his reign as national coach when he has not felt nervous.
He added: “Without any doubt every day as Brazil coach I feel nervous. It is four years since I’ve been coaching the Brazil team but I always feel butterflies in my stomach. I am wearing Brazilian colours and I know a lot of people would like to be in my place.”
North Korea are, on the face of it, the weakest team by far in Group G but Dunga will take nothing for granted against them.
“They are a very quick team, a team that plays close passing football, rapid football and we are going to have to find a way to tackle their style of play,” he added.
“We have to congratulate the Asian teams, they have evolved tremendously over the years. They are no longer the weaker team. Sometimes we believe that a certain team is the best, but football does not lie. We have to respect our opponent and do everything in our grasp to win.”
North Korea have been taking advice from the team which reached the last eight of the 1966 World Cup – and coach Kim Jong-hun believes the current generation have the mentality to beat Brazil.
Kim refuses to accept the match is purely a damage-limitation exercise and revealed that some of the team from 1966 – when North Korea beat Italy 1-0 in Middlesbrough before a 5-3 quarter-final defeat to Portugal at Goodison Park – have been an inspiration to his men.
He said: “We met them before we came here, while we were training. They came quite often to the training camps and gave us advice and encouragement and told us what it would be like and gave us encouragement so that we could make our great leader Kim Jong-il very proud.
“When we meet Brazil it could be a difficult match but nevertheless the three points we get for winning the match will not be just for Brazil, they will be precious for us as well.
“Our goal is to gain those three victory points and that our team truly becomes one and we exploit our full potential.”
Asked how his team – ranked 85th in the world – could possibly overcome number one-ranked Brazil, Kim said: “Our players are very qualified, they are very talented and they don’t fall behind any other players in the world.
“Their talent and quality will be shown and this will bring great happiness to our leader Kim Jong-il and show that people of Korea DPR have a strong mentality.
“Of course Brazil are a strong team, they are a perennial favourite. But we have a strong mentality and that is why I think we will prevail.”

That will put enormous pressure on Pyongyang City keeper Ri, Myong-Guk and his fellow defenders. The man to watch is midfielder Nam, Song-Chol. The versatile 27-year old can play the holding role, but also has a blistering left foot.

Plenty of attention will fall on the North Koreans, who for political and social reasons will be one of the great curiosities of the finals. for you to marry in brazil, you will need to have your original birth certificate and take it to the brazilian embassy in india for the consulate to validate.
you will also need to have proof that you are currently single…which will probably be letters or notes from relatives and friends who will swear that you are single, including one from your parents.
you must take proof of residency, such as utility bills in your name or tax returns or other official mail sent to you at your current address.
all of this must be translated into portuguese by an official translator at the embassy.
of course you will also need a current passport and i believe that indian citizens must also apply for a visa to travel to brazil, which you will do through the embassy.
once in brazil you will have to go to the indian embassy there to get a declaration of civil status.
all of these papers will have to be brought to the civil registrar’s office in the location where you plan to marry and then you will have to wait 15 days for the banns to be published before they will give you the marriage license. you should plan on having to be in brazil at least 30 days prior to the wedding date so you can do all of this.
once you are married, in order to obtain permanent residency statis in brazil, you will need to be patient because it can take up to 3 years. during that time, the civil police will make periodic unannounced visits to your home in order to determine that your marriage is a real marriage and not just one of convenience in order to gain entry into brazil.
after you have been married for 5 years, you will be eligable for brazilian citizenship.
